My final year project (FYP) or individual project (IP) as the module was called at Aston, was our big computer science project for our final year (who would've guessed?). The project you choose can either be a research project or a deliverable (coding) project and mine over time became a mix of the 2, mainly researching the results from the deliverable I created. What my project was on was actually focused on swarm AI and how it could help save people in a disaster scenario.

You may be asking what swarm AI even is and it's not the kind of AI you might immediately think of today, that being LLMs. No, the AI I am Simulation Runningreferring to are agents (the programming that autonomously controls robots, drones, UAVs, etc.) which can be simple or complex in design (software and hardware) and are made to carry out a specific task. Swarm AI takes many simple agents to work together to achieve more complex behaviour.

In my case, I choose to program a simulation of a swarm of drones (or UAVs) that would have searching drones to look for survivors in a flooded town and then communicate with drones that would guide found survivors back to safety. This created a 2 tiered situation where there where 2 distinct groups of drones within the swarm with different tasks (known as a heterogenous swarm) and I researched how effective different methods of searching and guiding where in simulation. This research was done in my report for the project where I talked about referenced literature, the design of the simulation, research of the results, conclusions and what to improve/do next.

In the end I achieved a 2:1 grade for the module which I'm quite proud of. You can find the GitHub to my swarm simulation down below.
